The practicing physician questions were intended for physicians in clinical practice, as well as in other medically related fields (e.g. teaching, administration, research) and physicians on sabbatical/temporary leave of absence. The questions focused on the physician's clinical settings, areas of specialization, perspectives regarding their patients' access to the different types of medical care they need, what satisfies physicians the most about being a physician, their workload, the types of patient communities they are serving, how their practice is changing, and the role/impact of computer technology on clinical, administrative and educational aspects of a physician's practice.
The medical student questions focused on their education and training (past, present, and future), their plans concerning their future practice and work settings, their financial concerns, factors that influenced their decision to enter medical school, and their familial educational background. Many of these questions were also asked of the second year medical residents, enabling trend analyses over time. Additional medical resident questions focused on their plans for future provision of procedures, and participation in professional activities. These questions paralleled the questions asked of practicing physicians, enabling trend analyses, and informing human resource planning strategies.
